Home FAQs
Biomedical Science is combination of basic biological and medical sciences, which deals with the topics of interdisciplinary areas to understand the biological principles that govern the functioning & health status of the animal or human body, to discover the mechanisms of disease development and to find an appropriate way to prevent and/or cure a disease by developing advanced diagnostic tools or new therapeutic strategies.
Biomedical Science is different from Biomedical Engineering. Biomedical Science is concerned mainly with the facts, theories, and in-vitro, or in-vivo models that describe biological and medical phenomena. Whereas biomedical engineering applies the skills and techniques of traditional engineering (e.g., in-silico) in order to solve biological or clinical problems.
The course is basically designed to prepare students for a career in academia and industry in order to inculcate the passion and commitments towards research and development. The most logical progression is a Ph.D. program followed by post-doctoral research, however, avenues for openings in academia, research institutes/centers and the industry can be explored by students as well.
Master degree program in Biomedical Science provides students and researchers with an excellent foundation for further higher studies/research in various biomedical fields such as Human Genetics, Biochemistry, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Diagnostics, Cell Biology, infection Biology, Immunobiology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Microbiology, Immunonutrition, OMICS Technologies, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics etc. Students are encouraged to complete Master's program in a relevant field followed by Ph.D. program and post-doctoral research.
The broad analytical, scientific and personal skills gained during Master program in Biomedical Science will equip students for a variety of careers. On successful completion, graduates will be able to work as teaching faculty or researcher in the institution/university, technologists in clinical/research laboratories or in the Bio-Pharmaceutical industry, Health promotion and policy research & implementation, Research and Research infrastructure management, Food technology, etc.
Research is an integral/important part of Biomedical Science program. Students are encouraged to actively involved in the ongoing research projects at various departments to get hands-on training and carryout independent research project under the guidance of experienced faculty as a part of the curriculum, which is facilitated by the university/institute. Students will also get opportunity to develop enhance their skills by exposing or practicing new and/or additional practicals (apart from their regular syllabi), regular seminars/invited or guest lectures from eminent teachers and scientists from multidisciplinary areas, and educational trips to reputed academic institutes and industry, all leading to increasing exposure towards research and innovation.
Yes. Students will be trained in various aspects of academic and research requirements, such as experimental design, research techniques, documentation, analysis & organisation of research data, critical thinking and interpretation of the research data, presentation of research outcome as seminar/webinar at workshops/conferences, reviewing scientific literature, writing project report, research paper and research grant proposal, preparing of experimental protocols/laboratory manuals as well as laboratory instruments.
Candidate seeking admission to M.Sc. (Biomedical Science) program must have passed bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years duration in life sciences (Biomedical Science / Biotechnology / Molecular Biology / Biochemistry / Microbiology / Botany / Zoology / Genetics / Pharmacology/ Animal Sciences / Home Science / Chemistry with Biological subjects) or passed bachelor degree in BE / B. Tech majoring in biotechnology or Medical / Dental / B. Pharm / B.Sc. Nursing (3 or 4 years) from reputed and recognized University / Board with not less than 50% marks aggregate. Selection of eligible candidates shall be based on the eligibility qualification, marks secured in the entrance test and personal interview to be conducted by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University.
The post-graduation degree has a significant impact on what a candidate's career will look like, so one can expect to study in-depth about the subject/s that they are interested and will be chosen for further studies leading doctoral degree. Post-graduate programme in Biomedical Science will appeal to those planning a career in biomedical research or related areas as well as graduate-entry careers in industry, management and the public sectors. Generally, a large proportion of biomedical Science graduates choose further study before entering successful academic or industry-based research careers.
Students can download the application from university website and/or submit online through the admission portal of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University and follow the admission procedure.
