M.Sc. in Human Genetics

Introduction to Program

The M.Sc. in Human Genetics offered by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University is a research-based, translational postgraduate program. One of its distinguishing features is its emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach that includes human genetics, cell and molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, regenerative medicine, and biochemistry, with a focus on human healthcare. This creates a strong foundation for research and development, innovative ideas, and translation of discoveries toward the betterment of human health.

Objectives of the Program

The two-year Master of Science in Human Genetics program provides students with an intellectually stimulating education to acquire a systematic understanding of integrated specialties of human genetics, molecular biology, and life sciences. This program gives students a strong foundation in a range of subjects including human genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, cancer biology, bioinformatics, molecular medicine, biostatistics, and research methodology, among others.

This program provides personal satisfaction by enabling the use of scientific and analytical skills to investigate diseases and help scientists, physicians, and clinicians alleviate suffering and save lives. It helps students build an interesting and rewarding career with a wide range of opportunities for personal and professional development. The program aims to help students:

• Acquire hands-on experience in laboratory techniques—skill development.
• Develop communication skills through group discussions, journal clubs, and seminar presentations.
• Gain experience in preparing audio-visual teaching aids, posters/manuscripts, and presenting at conferences/workshops, as well as publishing in journals.
• Shape their advanced studies, Ph.D., and post-doctoral research in areas of Biological and Medical Sciences that interest them the most.
• Seek jobs in Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industries, the Healthcare industry, and Research Centers/Institutes/Universities.

Structure of the Program

• Duration of the Program

  The syllabus of the M.Sc. (Human Genetics) program has been prepared as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). It follows UGC guidelines, SET/NET examination syllabi, syllabi of other universities, and inputs from Expert Committee Members.

• Examination Pattern

  Each semester will have:

  • Theory papers of 70 marks each for University Examination and 30 marks each for internal assessment
  • Practical courses of 70 marks each for University Examination and 30 marks each for internal assessment

• Maximum Period for Completion

  The maximum duration for completing the M.Sc. (Human Genetics) program shall not exceed 4 years (8 semesters).

• Eligibility for Admission

  A candidate seeking admission to the M.Sc. (Human Genetics) program must have passed a bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration in biological sciences (Biomedical Science / Biotechnology / Molecular Biology / Biochemistry / Microbiology / Botany / Zoology / Genetics / Home Science / Chemistry with biological subjects),
  OR
  a bachelor’s degree in B.E./B.Tech. (Biotechnology/Medical/Dental), B.Pharma, B.Sc. Nursing (3 or 4 years), Pharmacology, Animal Sciences, or any other Life Science degree from a recognized University/Board, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate. Candidates currently appearing for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply. They must clear the exam before the finalization of the admission process. • Mode of Selection of Eligible Candidates

  Admission to the M.Sc. (Human Genetics) program is based on:

  • Marks secured in the qualifying entrance examination
  • Marks in the qualifying degree
  • Personal interview
  The entrance test will be conducted by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University. If the number of eligible applicants is less than or equal to the number of available seats, the test/interview requirement may be waived based on the recommendation of the HoD/HoI/Program Coordinator and Dean.
  A relaxation of grades will be provided to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently abled categories as per Govt. of India guidelines.

• Entrance Examination Details

  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Part A: 30 MCQs (General Aptitude) — 1 mark each
  • Part B: 70 MCQs (Bachelor-level Life Sciences) — 1 mark each

  Additional rules:

  • There will be 100 questions with four options each; only one correct answer.
  • Multiple answers for a single question are not allowed; such responses will be rejected.
  • Mobile phones and electronic devices are strictly prohibited.
  • Only programmable calculators are allowed. (Usually non-programmable devices are allowed; please confirm.)
  • All examination conditions follow University guidelines.

• Exemption from Entrance Examination

  Students who have qualified TIFR, JNU, CEEB, IIT JAM, AIIMS, ICAR, AIEEA, or equivalent national-level examinations in the relevant area are exempted from the entrance exam and will be directly called for a personal interview. 10% of total seats are reserved for such students and are allotted on a merit-cum-means basis.

• Admission Procedure

  Students seeking admission must submit the application in the prescribed format, available on the University website, along with the application fee and required documents as mentioned in the application form.

• Start of the Program

  The program commences on the date prescribed by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University.
